Health & Life Skills

Healthy Habits (Grades 1-5)

Designed to incorporate healthy living and active learning in every part of the Club Experience, Healthy Habits emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity and improving overall well-being. The program, offered to members in grades 1-5, is the Mind component of Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul.
The Healthy Habits curricula is designed to teach young people about the benefits of developing healthy habits such as eating smart and being physically active; equip members with skills to adopt healthier habits by participating in fun and engaging learning activities both at the Club and at home; and encourage them to take small steps toward positive behavior changes.  Miss Kelsey runs this program down in the first floor Art Room.

Cooking (Grades 1-5)

Club cooking classes teach kitchen safety and basic cooking skills,  Participants will prepare dishes and enjoy what they make. Cooking classes fill up quickly, so members should be sure to talk to Miss Kelsey to secure a spot in the kitchen each week.

Participants will engage in discussion and role-playing, practicing resilience and refusal skills, developing assertiveness, strengthening decision-making skills and analyzing media and peer influence. The ultimate goal is to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior.

Passport to Manhood

Passport to Manhood (also referred to as "Man Cave") promotes and teaches responsibility in Club boys ages 11-14. Passport to Manhood consists of 14 sessions, each of which concentrates on a specific aspect of manhood through highly interactive activities. Each Club participant receives his own “passport” to underscore the notion that he is on a personal journey of maturation and growth. Passport to Manhood represents a targeted effort to engage young men in discussions activities that reinforce positive behavior.

SMART Girls is a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls in three age groups, spanning ages 8 to 18. Through dynamic sessions, participatory activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls explore their own and societal attitudes and values as they build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good health care and developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
